Pools announced for 2018 U-17 Youth Football tournament

Teams now know who they will face in March’s showcase youth football event.

With just over a month to go until the 2018 U-17 Youth Football Tournament delivered by the Youth Football Development Trust, taking place between March 16-18, the pools and match schedule have been released.

The men’s competition has been split into four pools with the top two from each pool progressing to the cup quarter-finals while the top two from the two women’s pools will compete for a spot in the cup final.

An intriguing match-up is set for match day one in the women’s competition with last year’s finalists Forrest Hill Milford and Hamilton Wanderers set to do battle in pool A.

Eastern Suburbs will be another team to watch out for in pool A with a number of promising youngsters at the Kohimarama based club having already made their debut in the Lotto Northern Regional Football League.

In pool B Three Kings United and Glenfield Rovers, third and fourth in 2017 respectively, headline the group but the Auckland based clubs will certainly face some tough competition from the likes of Claudelands Rovers who will no doubt feature a handful of players from the winning WaiBOP U-16 girls side in December’s National Age Group Tournament.

In the men’s competition Birkenhead United will be eyeing their fourth successive title but will need to secure a top two finish ahead of fellow pool C sides Wellington United, Waitakere City, Coastal Spirit, Ferrymead Bays and Hamilton Wanderers to have any chance of completing such a feat.

Last year’s runners up Western Springs headline pool A while pool B feature perennial powerhouses Onehunga Sports who will likely face stiff competition from South Auckland’s Manurewa.

‘Rewa are bringing a young side with many of the youngsters featuring for Auckland Football’s U-15 side at the National Age Group Tournament where they placed second. Selwyn United are the sole pool B outfit that do not come from Auckland

Rounding out the men’s competition is pool D featuring a Cashmere Technical side that will be hoping to medal this year after a fourth place finish in 2017.

Due to the late withdrawal of a club in the boys section there is still one team to be added in Pool D. The team will be announced in due course.
